backyard cottages AKA granny pods

The word is out–backyard cottages help  keep generations together and provide an opportunity for extra income too.  What are they?  A separate structure on the same property as a single family home.  Often they include universal design elements for aging in place.   Properties on alleys work especially well with this idea.

Recently the Puget Sound Business Journal highlighted cottages around the country and here in Seattle where parents can live nearby their kids and help each other.

We’re working on a Ballard Backyard Cottage for the homeowner’s father with Model Remodel–the dad pad.  We’re  incorporating many universal design features on this energy efficient garage conversion/ addition, plus we’re focused on daylighting and privacy.  This remodel combines contemporary design with traditional elements to blend in with the original 1920s home.

Located in the Ballard Urban Village,  there are plenty of shops and cafes are nearby.

We’ll keep you updated as construction progresses.

In Greenwood, our backyard cottage is under construction.  Located near downtown Greenwood, it will be a studio rental first, providing additional income.  Later it will  available for aging parents.  It is one level at grade with a universally designed bathroom.

We saved the large adjacent hemlock tree using a creative cantilevered foundation.  Bright colors and a fresh take on rainscreen siding panels add to the neighboring alley and blend  both contemporary and traditional design elements.
