Retrofit Your Home for Energy Efficiency

You’ll find the days have gotten colder, and for most of us that means we’ve had to turn on the heat. As we all adjust the temperature on the thermostat every year at this time, we think about the energy efficiency of our homes.

It is a big topic, and there is a lot of information available on the internet with many sources you can search.  Live-work-play would like to share some overall strategies to help you get started.

First, get a blower door test and energy assessment.  You can schedule an appointment with an energy retrofit consultant who can perform a blower door test and assess where the issues are.  Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need a referral or have a question about this process.

Every house is unique, but below are the usual culprits found in an assessment:

THE ATTIC:  if you have not had your attic air-sealed and insulated, most likely you are losing lots of heat and heated air through this space.  Air sealing this space and adding insulation can help substantially in conserving energy and lowering costs.  Read more on the topic in this comprehensive article at Green Building Advisor

ELECTRICAL OUTLETS: The electrical receptacles in the exterior walls are usually not air-sealed and allow lots of air to move through the wall.  One quick way to reduce air movement is to add gaskets.  Here’s a couple of  links to find out how to accomplish that easy task:

THE BASEMENT:  If you have open joist bays in the basement or crawl space, you can air seal and insulate the area to reduce air flow in and out of your home. Here’s a link with some DIY instructions:    http://howtohomeinsulation.com/insulation_basics_losing_money_sealing_basement_air_leaks.html

Stay warm and toasty this fall and winter and know that, with perhaps just a few minor adjustments, your home will be less drafty, more comfortable, and energy efficient!
